How to Take Care of Sustainable & Eco-Friendly Products During Monsoon ?

The monsoon season in Kerala brings life to nature but also brings challenges—especially when it comes to taking care of eco-friendly products made from natural materials. At Iraaloom, most of our products—be it lifestyle accessories, clothing, or gifting items—are handcrafted from sustainable materials like natural fabrics, bamboo, cotton, jute, clay, or wood. Except for a few home décor items, we avoid chemical treatments to keep our products as natural and safe as possible.

Because of this, they may require a little extra love and care during the rainy and humid months. With high moisture levels in the air, there are chances of fungal infections or a musty smell on some items. But don’t worry—it’s a completely natural reaction and not harmful. With the right care, your eco-friendly pieces can remain fresh, functional, and beautiful for years.

Why Natural Products React During Monsoon?

Natural materials are biodegradable and breathable. That’s one of their biggest advantages—but also a reason they absorb moisture more easily than synthetic materials. High humidity and lack of sunlight can create the perfect environment for mildew, fungus, or slight discoloration if not properly cared for.

Tips to Take Care of Your Eco-Friendly Products in Monsoon

1. Keep Them Dry

Always store your products in a dry, well-ventilated space. Avoid placing them in closed cupboards or bags right after use, especially if they’re even slightly damp.

Note: Use silica gel pouches or neem leaves in storage spaces—they naturally absorb moisture and repel insects.

2. Sunlight is Your Friend

Whenever there’s a break in the rain, take the opportunity to air out and sun-dry your natural products—especially bags, mats, and accessories. Even 30 minutes of gentle sunlight can help remove any trapped moisture.

3. Clean Gently but Regularly

Dust and wipe your wooden, clay, or bamboo products with a dry or slightly damp cloth. For fabrics like cotton or linen, use mild, natural detergent and cold water for washing. Avoid machine drying; instead, flat dry them in shade.

4. Avoid Plastic Storage

Plastic covers can trap moisture inside. Use breathable cotton or muslin cloth bags for storage. This allows airflow and prevents mold growth.

5. For Wooden or Brass Products

Wipe with a soft, dry cloth. You can apply a little natural oil (like coconut oil) to wooden items to nourish them and create a mild protective layer. For brass, use natural cleaners like tamarind or lemon juice to keep the shine.

6. Use Camphor or Cloves

Place camphor tablets or whole cloves in your wardrobes or storage boxes. They act as natural dehumidifiers and add a pleasant fragrance.
